RAV4 feels very comfortable at speed. But you will need to brake for washes, ditches, and potholes, and then you compress your front suspension and nose right into the obstacle. I found that RAV4 (on stock Geolandars) goes pretty well up and down slope, on gravel, sand/clay mix. Dirt is ok if not excessive.

Feb 07, 2019 at 11:22am ET Toyota is putting on quite a show these days in Chicago by displaying not only the Land Cruiser Heritage Edition, Sequoia TRD Pro, and the 2020 Tacoma, but also this RAV4 TRD Off-Road. Using the Adventure grade as the basis, the new member of the family adds an assortment of upgrades created by Toyota Racing Development (TRD) taking inspiration from the rally-ready RAV4. Finished in gray with a white roof combo available only on this model, the more adventurous RAV4 starts off the list of upgrades with lighter 18-inch matte black wheels wrapped in all-terrain tires. Not just any A/T rubbers, but a Falken Wildpeak Trail set with a bespoke tread pattern and compound specially created as per TRD’s requirements. The tires – which by the way are severe snow rated – feature a square shoulder design to diminish the risks of punctures regardless if you’re on or off road and have an open shoulder grooving layout to get rid of mud, snow, and debris. Gallery: 2020 Toyota RAV4 TRD Off-Road Beyond the new coat of paint and rugged shoes, the RAV4 TRD Off-Road comes with a specially tuned suspension to smooth out any road imperfections and make your off-road adventure more enjoyable. TRD tweaked the red coil springs for bumpy roads, while the shocks have been reconfigured to enhance rebound control. Toyota goes on to specify the new bump stops boost body control when traveling on uneven surfaces. The styling echoes that of the standard RAV4 Adventure, but with some discreet TRD updates here and there. You can have the all-wheel-drive SUV in Midnight Black or Lunar Rock as well, and in both cases, the main color can be combined with the Ice Edge roof pictured here. Customers can also get the TRD Off-Road version in Super White or Ruby Flare Pearl. Toyota at the 2019 Chicago Auto Show: Stepping inside the cabin, the first thing you’ll notice will likely be the all-weather floor mats, with TRD branding, of course. The seats come wrapped in what Toyota refers to as SofTex, which is lighter than leather and offers greater durability. Rounding off the novelties is the TRD stitching on the front headrests, along with an all-weather rear cargo mat. Pricing details have not been disclosed, but it goes without saying the RAV4 TRD Off-Road will command a premium over the $32,900 Adventure grade upon which it’s based. Source: Toyota

The 2024 Toyota RAV4 begins at $28,475. That’s for a base LE model with front-wheel drive. All-wheel drive is an extra $1,400. At the top of the RAV4 food chain sits the TRD Off-Road model. | First Test2021 Toyota RAV4 TRD Off-Road First Test: Temper Those ExpectationsAs if you needed us to tell you this, even this upgraded RAV4 is no rav4 Full OverviewSometimes, combining two good things makes for one super awesome thing. See: chocolate and peanut butter. Sometimes, not so much. See: the 2021 Toyota RAV4 TRD paper, it should work. The RAV4 is a solid compact crossover that's a few minor upgrades away from being fantastic. Toyota Racing Development, better known as TRD, makes awesome off-road stuff and incorporates them on rigs like the Tacoma pickup and 4Runner SUV. Problem is, not all TRDs are made the same. A TRD Pro means the TRD people really went to town on the vehicle. TRD Off-Road means someone threw some off-road-ish parts at it and called it a what we have here, albeit with a weaker starting point for an off-road rig than a Tacoma or 4Runner. There's already an off-road-ish RAV4 trim called the Adventure, but Toyota decided to cash in on the TRD name with the RAV4 TRD Off-Road. the TRD Off-Road gets knobbier tires, retuned shock absorbers, and some skidplates. Along with some dress-up parts, the whole thing cost an extra $3,685 over a RAV4 Means Unpaved RoadDespite having "Off-Road" right in the name, though, the RAV4 TRD Off-Road isn't much more off-road-capable than the Adventure. Ride height stays the same, at inches, as in the Adventure. Approach, breakover, and departure angles don't change meaningfully, either, so this SUV can't tackle any bigger obstacles than the Adventure should've expected that to be the case, especially after Toyota's brand manager told us as much when the vehicle was introduced. To be sure, though, we took the TRD Off-Road to an off-road park and hit the bunny slopes. Sure enough, we were dragging the long nose or the low belly in no time at all. The skidplates, at least, felt like they were worth the Dynamic Torque-Vectoring All-Wheel Drive was even more disappointing. Such a system should be able to detect a spinning wheel and send power to the other side of the vehicle, but the TRD Off-Road didn't really do so. Over offset bumps or in deep ruts, it was easy to get one or more wheels barely in contact with the ground or completely in the air, at which point the all-wheel-drive system half-heartedly tried transferring power before just giving up and letting the loose wheels not all bad news, though. You just have to know the vehicle's limitations are much lower than the TRD Off-Road badges suggest. We also took it through sand and mud and found the beefier tires and all-wheel-drive system handled those situations much better. As long as your definition of off-road is limited to bad weather and unpaved roads, the RAV4 TRD Off-Road will get you there. Just like the RAV4 Adventure, or really, any all-wheel-drive Cost Isn't Just in DollarsIf the TRD Off-Road were simply underwhelming off-road, it would be more forgivable as most owners won't do much, if any, off-roading. Unfortunately, the revalving of the shock absorbers for off-road duty hasn't served anyone well. On-road, the TRD Off-Road rides more stiffly than other RAV4s, which are already firm. This only makes things worse off-road, where you're constantly jostled. Generally, off-road shocks are softer to better absorb rough surfaces, but for some reason Toyota went the other way on this mechanical changes have had almost zero effect on the RAV4 Off-Road's instrumented performance compared to other models, though. Off-road tires tend to produce less cornering and braking grip on pavement than street tires, but the Falken Wildpeak A/T Trail 01As fitted here make no real RAV4 TRD Off-Road stops from 60 mph in 130 feet, on the long side for the segment but otherwise even with other RAV4 models we've tested. Similarly, the average lateral g it pulled on the skidpad and its figure-eight lap at average g are right on top of other the RAV4 TRD Off-Road accelerates to 60 mph in seconds, within tenths of any other non-hybrid sibling. It's an acceptable time for a compact crossover, but we can't help but wish the TRD Off-Road were offered with the RAV4's impressive hybrid and plug-in hybrid powertrains. The extra power makes the RAV4 better to drive on the road and would help off-road, as well, all while getting better fuel economy. As is, the TRD Off-Road's transmission seems to be programmed the same as any other non-hybrid's and prioritizes efficiency over Bottom LineYou can get a set of the TRD Off-Road's Falken all-terrain tires for less than $1,000 after tax, so we can't see any good reason to spend nearly $3,700 on the whole package. We recommend you stick with the RAV4 Adventure and buy a new set of off-road tires if you plan to spend a lot of time in mud, sand, and snow. That way, you'll retain the better ride quality and have effectively the same off-road capability. Stay out of situations where you'd need skidplates (which, as established, are hard to get into with a RAV4 anyway), and you're good to good! Główny inżynier pojazdu, Masakatsu Nonaka, początkowo musiał włożyć niemały wysiłek w to, by zachęcić kierownictwo firmy do swojego projektu. I robią to dobrze!

Toyota’s RAV4 TRD Off-Road and Subaru’s Forester Wilderness both promise a blend of compact crossover convenience and real off-road capability, but they offer different experiences. Alex Kwanten Butched-up off-road versions of small SUVs are becoming an ever-more significant subvariant of the popular compact-crossover category, part of the larger trend of overlanding everything from Porsche 911s to box trucks. Toyota added a TRD Off-Road version the RAV4 in 2020, implying a kinship with its brawny 4Runner and Tacoma. For 2022, Subaru fired back with a Wilderness variant of its diminutive Forester, following in the tire-tracks of the bigger Outback Wilderness. Both look suitably jacked, but it’s not always obvious to the casual consumer whether there’s any real capability packed into these lifted and aggressively-cladded cute utes. Do they boast serious trail chops or are they more weekend-warrior cosplay? Fortunately, both a RAV4 TRD Off-Road and a Forrester Wilderness were on hand at Mudfest, the Northwest Automotive Press Association’s annual event that puts multiple trucks and SUVs head-to-head on the track and the off-road course. So we had the chance not only to test their mettle on the road course, through water-crossings and over a log-pile obstacle and deeply rutted terrain, but to see how they stacked up against each other in these extreme driving environments as well. Here’s what we found. Forester Wilderness Versus RAV4 TRD Off-Road: On the Pavement Throw these two on the track and already they couldn’t be more different. Neither crossover is what you’d call quick—they each get a non-turbocharged 4-cylinder, though the Forester’s, while less powerful on paper, gets a slightly snappier-feeling launch than the RAV4 due to the Wilderness’ steeper final drive ratio. Both rigs get drive modes, though the RAV4’s Sport feels a little tamer than the Forester’s, which just seems to pull out a few more stops in homage to its WRX cousin. Carving through the turns, the Forester gets an edge from its ultra-nimble steering—the feel is very dialed-up and borders on numb, but it really helps wing it through the slalom. Its tall, boxy proportions are certainly apparent, but the well-tuned handling helps rein in the worst of the body roll. By contrast, the RAV4’s more off-road-specific suspension feels a little soggy on the track, with quite a bit of lean, and heavy steering that tends toward sluggish. However, the quick steering that’s nice on the track is a liability on the highway, where the Forester feels twitchy compared to the RAV4. The Subaru also lets way more road noise into the cabin than the RAV4, with the latter’s absorbent shocks and cushy interior. Over an expanse of gravel road at speed, the Forester let every undercarriage rock-strike be known, and joined in the cacophony with its own interior squeaks and rattles. The RAV4 remained serene and well-isolated over the same stretch. As for fuel economy, this is where the Forester’s perkier final drive ratio works against it, causing it to rev higher and burn gas on the highway: it nets out at an EPA-estimated 26 mpg combined. The Toyota leads with 28. The RAV4 Prime returns much better mileage and is also off-road capable, but not quite like the TRD Off-Road. Our on-pavement verdict: The Forester Wilderness clinches it. Forester Wilderness Versus RAV4 TRD Off-Road: In the Dirt While Subaru may have written the book on AWD for all, both companies have strong four-wheelin’ lineages, and putting them head to head on Mudfest’s offroad course felt like it could be a toss-up. However, the Forester Wilderness has several advantages in this area, including taller ground clearance ( inches vs the RAV4’s better all-terrain tires and a button-operated front-facing trail cam to zoom in on obstacles. Both crossovers have hill descent control and a comparable set of terrain modes, but no axle lock. On the course, both crossovers trundled gamely over steep and slippery obstacles and scads of rutted dirt. The RAV4 is the only one of the two with a true torque-vectoring differential (standard on Adventure and TRD Off-Road trims), while the Forester’s torque-vectoring is brake-based. You’d think that would help it be more surefooted, but if anything, the RAV4 got more obvious intervention by its various stability- and traction-control nannies, with a bit of rumbling and chattering over the more unstable surfaces. It also scraped quite a bit more in deep ruts than the Forester Wilderness due to its lower ground clearance. Our off-road verdict: Forester Wilderness, no contest. Forester Wilderness Versus RAV4 TRD Off-Road: Equipment and Utility In addition to the Forester’s better off-road performance, it is better-equipped to go into the woods as well. The Subaru alone gets a real fullsize spare, rendering the inevitable rock puncture a minor inconvenience rather than the end to your day on the trail. Its blazing six-point LED foglights throw better illumination than the RAV4’s wimpier LED fogs, and only the Forester boasts an 800-pound static capacity on its roof rack, enabling it to support an entire tent full of people up there. Both rigs get a standard steel front skidplate, but the Forester allows you to add extra underbody protection pieces as dealer-installed options. The RAV4 TRD Off-Road wins back some points in hardworking utility. It will tow a maximum of 3,500 pounds, while the Forester Wilderness tops out at 3,000. In addition, the RAV4 TRD Off-Road gets a standard 120V outlet in the rear cargo area, not available on the Forester, which is handy for powering campground equipment. Both crossovers are comparable in total cargo space, with the Forester at cubic-feet to the RAV4’s However, with all seats in place, the RAV4 has considerably more space in the rear hold, against the Forester’s Our utility verdict: Forester for off-path adventuring, RAV4 for hauling gear. Forester Wilderness Versus RAV4 TRD Off-Road: Cabin Environment In addition to its quieter cabin, the RAV4 TRD Off-Road surpasses the Forester Wilderness in interior appointments and features as well. The Toyota’s sculpted seats are plusher than the Forester’s, and are available heated and ventilated with memory. Subaru’s only have heat. Both cabins get a traditional layout with good analog controls, but the RAV4’s big rubberized climate knobs are more intuitive and easier to get hold of. The RAV4 gets a wireless charging pad in the center console, while the Forester gets a basic cubby that’s too small for many phones. Get further into the feature set and the gulf between the two crossovers widens. The RAV4 TRD Off-Road gets an optional 360-degree overhead camera, rearview mirror monitor and heated steering wheel, features that are unavailable on the Forester Wilderness. Its partially digital gauge cluster is more feature-rich than the Forester’s shrimpy info screen, and the infotainment, though it’s running Toyota’s older platform, is intuitive and features a good smattering of analog knobs and buttons. The two main advantages the Subaru has going for it are superior rear legroom ( inches vs the RAV4’s and fantastic outward visibility, as the Forester’s tall, airy cabin contrasts the more cloistered feel of the RAV4’s interior. Still, these sparse advantages don’t change the fact that the RAV4 is the quieter, more comfortable and better-equipped interior. Our interior verdict: RAV4 TRD Off-Road, easily. The RAV4 TRD Off-Road’s advantages in cabin comfort and available features don’t offset the fact that the more-capable and way-cheaper Forester Wilderness is ultimately a better deal. Alex Kwanten Forester Wilderness Versus RAV4 TRD Off-Road: Value All of this extra kit might suggest that the RAV4 TRD Off-Road is a better deal than the Forester Wilderness, until you consider the more than $6,000 dollar difference between these crossovers as pictured. While it’s true that the TRD starts off at a higher base price—$38,130 versus the Forester Wilderness’s $34,695—it doesn’t help that most of the Toyota’s extra goodies are added via pricey options packages that inflate the sticker price rapidly. With all the bells and whistles the RAV4 can easily blow past $40,000 with all the desirable features added, while the Subaru tops out in the mid-30s. Moreover, when you back out the Toyota’s optional fancy frills, the RAV4 TRD Off-Road and Forester Wilderness are pretty comparably equipped: Both get standard dual-zone climate, powered front seats and off-road terrain modes. And both crossovers come standard with very comprehensive active-safety tech that includes adaptive cruise, auto-emergency braking, lane-departure warning and assist, auto highbeams and blindspot monitoring with rear cross-traffic detection. Reverse automatic braking is even standard on the Forester Wilderness, but costs extra from Toyota. But ultimately, what tips the scales in the Forester’s favor is its superior offroad prowess, which is presumably what customers are seeking in the off-road trim of these crossovers. If you can put up with a little road noise and live without a few frills, the Subaru Forester Wilderness offers more overall capability for a much more appealing price. Our value verdict: Forester Wilderness is the better deal.

Drivers that are interested in off-roading are usually pushed toward a few SUVs: the Jeep Wrangler, the Toyota 4Runner, a used Toyota Land Cruiser, and one of Lexus’ antique behemoths. They’re tried and true options, having served thousands of off-roaders faithfully for decades. Here’s the thing, the majority of people that own these SUVs rarely scratch the surface of just how capable the machines are. Unless you’re into hardcore off-roading or rock crawling, these things are overkill. If you’re interested in occasionally hitting a trail and aren’t absorbed in things like departure and breakover angles, there’s the Toyota RAV4 TRD Off Road. It’s easy to take one look at the RAV4 TRD Off Road and think Toyota phoned it in. The TRD Off Road is the most expensive trim in the RAV4 family, and at first glance, it doesn’t really look like it’s worth $2,225 more than the similarly styled Adventure trim. But the most capable off-roader in the SUV lineup is worth a longer look. Under the rugged skin, you’ll find upgraded shocks and red coil springs that have been tuned by Toyota Racing Development (TRD). The SUV also comes with improved bump stops, which supposedly have been added to improve body control when the suspension reaches its limit. Knobby Falken Wildpeak A/T Trail tires that are wrapped around 18-inch matte black wheels have also been added to the mix. Make all the assumptions you want about the SUV’s off-roading abilities, but the darn thing certainly looks the part. Especially the tire and wheel combination. Having the look of an off-roader doesn’t mean much if you can’t back it up. We set out to find a trail to test the RAV4 TRD Off Road in the real world, and luckily, the SUV has the goods to back it up. Through word of mouth and AllTrails, I found Peter’s Mill Run in George Washington National Forest. It’s a trail that AllTrails rates as “easy.” It seemed like the best place to see just how capable the RAV4 TRD Off Road is. The trail starts off easy enough, appearing to be a gravel path in the middle of the forest. The driver-assist features have been turned off, to maintain my sanity from all those beeps and bongs, and the Dynamic Torque Vectoring AWD System is now in its “Rock & Dirt” setting. Hill descent control is also engaged. Tire pressures remain the same as they were when I set off. With the right buttons depressed, we set off further down the path. The trail goes from predominantly dirt with a few errant jagged rocks to nothing but jagged rocks within 10 minutes. The RAV4 doesn’t struggle for traction, but its first weakness becomes apparent – this SUV doesn’t have any real skid plates. Instead, what the SUV comes with are flimsy protective coverings. It’s a large difference that brings the pace down to a crawl. Normally, off-roading is slow going, requiring drivers to choose the path of least resistance to maintain speed and ensure things don’t get too bumpy. That’s the same case here, but it’s even more so when you know all that’s protecting the undercarriage is a bit of fragile plastic. Pair the lack of sturdy skid plates with just inches of ground clearance, which is the same amount you get from the Adventure trim, and you have to think twice about the routes you take. The physical size of the trail doesn’t help quell my anxiety, either. Some parts are large enough for two SUVs to fit, others are barely wide enough for the RAV4 to fit through. Moving to the tiny bit of runoff the trail offers in odd places to let others by is a pain, never knowing whether the RAV4 will get beached in the process. It’s slow going. The rocks see us average around 2 mph, barely hitting 3 mph on a short stretch of mercifully smooth dirt every now and then. Nevertheless, off-roading, when you’re not clamping down on the steering wheel and praying that a boulder doesn’t smash a hole in the oil pan, can be freeing. On the long stretches where the terrain evens out, you can take a quick break. Soaking in the dense forest, the birdsong, the slow hum of the RAV4’s engine — it’s an experience. Every so often, I have to get out of the car to move a massive boulder off of the trail. The handy 360-degree camera has a view that shows the front of the vehicle, but it’s not exactly in high definition, so it’s difficult to see precisely how big a rock is or where it’s placed on the road. Better to play it safe. Through the rough, rocky terrain, the RAV4 chugs along. We haven’t gotten stuck yet and the hill descent control system works just as intended, helping the SUV crawl downhill without having to constantly apply the brakes. The SUV’s even garnered some attention. Nearly every other SUV on the trail is a Wrangler or a 4Runner. You get the odd Land Cruiser here and an old Land Rover Defender there, but for the most part, Jeeps and Toyotas rule the trail. People stop, take pictures, give me a thumbs up. They’re surprised to see a RAV4 crawl through harsh stuff. One guy yells, “That’s so cool,” over the roar of his heavily-modified Chevrolet Silverado. The SUV manages to hit a sweet spot that true off-roaders have struggled with. On the steep, rocky terrain, the RAV4’s suspension feels like it’s been caught off guard. There’s not enough articulation to keep the SUV on an even keel, the suspension bottoms out way too quickly, there’s not enough ground clearance, and the traction control system is hypersensitive. Despite all of these issues, the RAV4 made it. It didn’t get stuck once, even with a novice behind the wheel, and to the surprise of everyone that saw it. The trail may have been rated at “easy,” but it certainly wasn’t as simple as I was led to believe. Toward the halfway mark, the trail changes. The forest becomes denser, days of rain have left large puddles and globs of mud, while the rocks give way to dirt. I switch the all-wheel-drive system to its “Mud & Sand” mode. There isn’t a discernible difference in the way the SUV feels or handles, but the RAV4 continues to chug along. So, the computers must have adjusted something. At the end of the long, three-hour journey, I was amazed that the RAV4 had completed the trip without fault. I was comfortable, with the air conditioning on high, the ventilated seat on, and, when there was service, SiriusXM bumping away on the JBL audio system. The journey back home was also comfortable and throughout the entire seven-hour day, the RAV4 averaged 30 mpg. People look at the Instagram and Twitter posts with SUVs and trucks tackling rough terrain and overlanding, and think they want in. The allure of off-roading is strong, marketing’s to blame for that. Eventually, though, when these people hit the trail, they soon realize that off-roading isn’t all that comfortable. It takes patience, loads of time, a strong stomach (the way SUVs jostle is unsettling), and compromises when it comes to on-road comfort. Loud, uncomfortable, inefficient, and unsettling to drive on-road, true off-roaders are only enjoyable when they’re in their element, off the beaten path. The only issue with the RAV4 TRD Off Road is its price. Our tester cost $41,780, which includes a few pricey packages. Even for a vehicle that has it all and can seemingly do it all, that’s a lot. If you’re really looking to go all-in on the #off-roading lifestyle, the 4Runer TRD Off Road costs $40,960. It’s a much more capable machine, though it isn’t nearly as comfortable, efficient, or as well equipped. The majority of people, aren’t really interested in a Wrangler or a 4Runner. Instead, something like the RAV4 TRD Off Road will do just fine. Comfortable 90% of the time on-road and massively impressive off-road, the SUV manages to hit a sweet spot that true off-roaders have struggled with. All you really need is a decent set of skid plates – please, for the love of God, don’t go off-roading without them – and you’ll be set. Now in its fifth generation, the Toyota RAV4 is a more complete package than it’s ever been. Cohesive looks, upgraded tech, and an expanded hybrid lineup make this RAV4 a very compelling sell to a large portion of crossover shoppers. To expand the appeal even further, Toyota added an off-road-centric model, with the 2020 RAV4 TRD Off-Road. It’s still every bit a RAV4, just with a more rugged aesthetic and, according to Toyota, some actual off-road chops. But at roughly $10,000 more than the base model, the Off-Road is somewhat less appealing with its $35,180 starting price. For the extra money, you get essentially a fully loaded Limited model, in addition to a TRD-tuned suspension, model-specific 18-inch matte black wheels, a few interior tweaks, and a multi-terrain select system. This package makes the Off-Road ready to tackle exactly what its name suggests. RAVed Up: Our test car wears a price tag of $41,780, which is big money for a RAV4. In fact, it’s too much money. But even with its hefty price, there’s something about the TRD Off-Road that leaves a lasting impression. It has some serious personality, especially with the two-tone paint and matte black accents. And for those needing to do some light off-roading from time to time that don’t require the larger 4Runner, the TRD Off-Road makes sense. Clint Simone; Associate Editor, Video Producer Favorite Thing: It Feels Expensive With Lots of Premium FeaturesLeast Favorite Thing: And That’s Because it is Expensive You’d be surprised by how many people complimented me on “my” car during the review period. With its slick, optional two-tone paint job and the TRD’s subtle-but-cool black accents, this little RAV4 actually has some presence to it, unlike the flavorless models of yesteryear. I don’t know if I’m sold on the rear three-quarter angle or the raked tailgate, but otherwise I think the RAV4 is the best looking car in its class. And within the RAV4 lineup, the TRD Off-Road is the best looking. This goes for the cabin, too. Where cheap plastics and drab seating materials used to fill the interiors of old RAV4s, this car feels like a whole new world. I love the patterned leatherette seats which are very supportive but not too stiff, and the fun red accents on the dash and in the cupholders are a nice added detail. Aside from the interior’s clean design, there are some great features onboard, too, like a heated, leather-wrapped steering wheel and dual-zone climate control. Driving the car is a less enlightening experience, however. The steering is pretty lifeless and when passing power is needed, the four-cylinder offers a bit too much noise. Apart from those flaws, I can’t fault the RAV for much else, though. It’s very well-damped and soaks up bumps in the roads nicely. And when I manage to do some light off-roading, the little Toyota handled itself nicely, similar to the Subaru Crosstrek. This is a car you could drive for long stretches of time and not get sick of it. Which is exactly what those who buy it should do. The TRD Off-Road’s $35,180 starting price (not including destination) is roughly $5,300 more than the Jeep Compass Trailhawk, and it's only $1,700 shy of the starting price of a Lexus NX300 (albeit the front-drive model). At this car’s $41,780 price, we’re into luxury crossover territory. And although the RAV4 is preferable to just about everything it competes with, it’s not a luxury crossover and shouldn’t be treated as such. At this car’s $41,780 price, we’re sneaking into luxury crossover territory. This RAV4 packs the following options: the $1,015 weather package with heated/ventilated front seats, heated steering wheel, and rain-sensing wipers, the $1,620 JBL audio system with navigation, the $1,950 Technology Package with 360-degree parking camera, front and rear parking assist, and wireless phone charging and the killer $500 two-tone paint. Of that kit, I’d only skip out on the audio system with navigation. The Rav4 comes standard with Apple Carplay and Android Auto, and the factory navigation just isn’t all that great. So I’m still at an MSRP round about $40,000, which is just too steep for a RAV4. Jeff Perez, Senior Editor Favorite Thing: Soft-Road ProwessLeast Favorite Thing: Expensive, Even Before Options A lot of people think they need an off-roader. They don't. What they actually need is a Toyota RAV4 TRD Off-Road. This rugged-enough crossover can easily tackle dirt paths and pockmarked pavement thanks to its tougher suspension bits, bespoke Falken Wildpeak Trail tires, and grip at all four corners. A good dirt-road flogging proves the TRD's toughness extends to more than just the nameplate; the reworked underpinnings and chunky tires grant the RAV4 better off-road manners than any of its more road-focused trims. Even the RAV4 Adventure model (which I also took off-road in my test) feels like a downgrade comparatively. The RAV4 TRD Off-Road is definitely less likable on-road, though, due to its new rugged personality. Those chunky tires are very loud, limit steering feedback, create a less-refined ride, and increase vibrations all around – even the side mirrors shake like salt shakers. But my biggest issue with this car is the price. There's no way to temper it: the RAV4 TRD Off-Road costs $35,280. And our tester, loaded with options like the $1,015 weather package, the $1,620 JBL audio system, and the $1,950 Technology Package – among a few others – costs $41,780. As Clint mentions, that's nearly luxury car territory (the Lexus NX is just $1,000 more expensive) and represents a huge jump from the base RAV's $25,950 starting price. Even the loaded RAV4 Limited costs $34,480. Competitors Chevrolet Equinox Ford Escape Honda CR-V Jeep Compass Mazda CX-5 Nissan Rogue Subaru Forester Body on frame vehicles are made for more stressful environments ie hardcore angles and rough running terrain. Aside from that, their ride height is higher by 2.6" or 9.6" which makes their usage very broad. Moreover, the real off roaders (sorry to rav4 owners including myself) have a 4wd control of 4H and 4L.
